Now without High Fructose Corn Syrup!

High Fructose Corn Syrup has become a bit of an obsession of mine over the past week or so. I posted a couple of times about it, mainly about the unintentionally hilarious and horrible ads produced by sweetsurprise.com, a website created by the Corn Refiners Association.

Well, as I made my Thomas' English Muffin for breakfast this morning, what did I see on the bag but the following:

It seems HFCS will now become the "no carbs" or "no trans fat" flavor-of-the-week of the food industry's marketing department. The sad thing is, this sort of branding is going to be treated as a fad only until the next uproar or buzzword emerges. A company shouldn't have to be proud that it doesn't use fabricated sweeteners. It should just do it because its the right thing to do.

Maybe other industries should adopt this tactic. Perhaps Major League Baseball should have players wear "now with no HGH" jerseys when they're not on the field. Or, the highway department can put up signs on the roads that say "Now with fewer pot holes."

Wait a minute, that just sounds silly.

Exactly.

I just want to let you know that this witchhunt of yours could be seen as un-American by those who grow this country's amber waves of grain. Perhaps you are proposing that we should open up the sugar pipeline to our "friends" in Cuba?

Hey, I say, if there is a sugar pipeline, I want to work at it.
